A Gradual Preschool Reading and Phonics Approach

Continue building reading confidence—one simple word at a time.

Gentle Phonics Unit Two is the second in an 8-unit series created for homeschool moms who want to teach reading with faith, rhythm, and trust in their child’s pace. This unit introduces more short A and short E CVC word families (ab, am, an, ap, eb, el, eg, en), as well as a new set of four high-frequency sight words to gently expand your child’s reading vocabulary.

Your child will explore 16 phonetic words like cab, jam, cap, web, leg, and pen, alongside four familiar sight words: at, my, this, and look. Like every resource in the Gentle Phonics series, this unit invites your child to read with movement, play, creativity, and connection.

Here’s what’s inside Unit Two:

Tips for teaching phonics to young kids:

  • Make sure they’re ready: Kids should already recognize the letter shapes before introducing phonics AND you should see an interest in knowing what letters say and what words are before beginning.
  • Go slow: Introduce a few at a time and make sure they’re catching on before introducing more.
  • Start with short vowel sound CVC words: CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant) are easy to grasp, commonly found, and good building blocks for bigger words.
